  • Dem infighting over abortion ‘litmus test’ poses new headache - Moderate Dems fret over Warren claims of progressive takeover

    Posted 2017-08-18 17:25:30 by: Nap-Sack ....

Washington Democrats are facing a new backlash from pro-choice and liberal groups, after a party leader declared no "litmus test" for pro-life, 2018 House candidates. The internal conflict got started this spring but exploded in late July when Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee leader Rep. Ben Ray Luján said they will not withhold financial support from anti-abortion candidates. The New Mexico lawmaker’s comments sparked an immediate backlash from liberal supporters that continued this week. Cecile Richards, who runs Planned Parenthood and its political action committee, called Luján’s statement “shocking.” The abortion divide creates new complications as Democrats try to raise money for their ambitious plan to retake the House and perhaps the Senate.  Democrats know they desperately need a message that appeals to voters beyond those on the country’s liberal East and West coasts - especially after now-President Trump and down-ticket candidates romped last year through such Democratic strongholds as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. But they also want to keep their allies on the left.  Richards told in an interview published Tuesday that she has “no idea” whether Luján’s comments were part of Democrats’ attempts at a broader appeal.  ...

  • North Korea: How Christians survive in the world's most anti-Christian nation

    Posted 2017-08-18 17:25:30 by: Nap-Sack ....

For 16 years, North Korea has been  the “most oppressive place in the world for Christians,” and this week the U.S. State Department  it as one of the world’s worst religious persecutors – torturing and executing those even suspected of worshipping God. But that still hasn’t stopped an estimated 36 percent of the population – around 9 million – from practicing Christianity. “Life is extremely difficult for all North Koreans, but Christians face an even tougher road,” Jeff King, president of  told Fox News. “Christians are accused of being imperialists seeking to overthrow the government and those who are caught practicing their faith are arrested, horrendously tortured, imprisoned and [sometimes] immediately put to death.” So how do these brave devotees do it in the most closed country on earth? On the surface, Christianity does exist in North Korea. Its constitution on paper vows to protect religious freedom and forbids discrimination based on one’s faith. Thus, the capital, Pyongyang, is currently host to five state-controlled churches – the Protestant Bongsu, Chilgol and Jeil Churches, the Catholic Jangchung Cathedral and the most recent being the Orthodox Holy Trinity Russian Church. Yet all are deemed to be little more than fraudulent showpieces for visiting officials and tourists. Foreign visitors are routinely paraded around these sites, in which aptly dressed church officials clutch Bibles and bow at ...

LeBron James slammed President Trump during a speech at an Ohio amusement park Tuesday, calling Trump the “so-called president” while pleading for people to unite following the Charlottesville tragedy. James spoke at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio, and told the crowd he wanted to spend a moment to address last weekend’s violent protests where Heather Heyer, 32, was killed Saturday after a car rammed into a group protesting white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va. While holding his baby daughter, James turned his thoughts to the violence. "I know there's a lot of tragic things happening in Charlottesville," James said. "I just want to speak on it right now. I have this platform and I'm somebody that has a voice of command and the only way for us to get better as a society and for us to get better as people is love. And that's the only way we're going to be able to conquer something as one. It's not about the guy that's the so-called president of the United States, or whatever the case." James tweeted a message criticizing Trump earlier in the day. “Hate has always existed in America. Yes we know that but Donald Trump just made it fashionable again! Statues has nothing to do with us now!” James wrote. ...

  • UK court awards Down syndrome man nearly $13G after govt orders wife not to have sex with him

    Posted 2017-08-18 17:25:30 by: Nap-Sack ....

A British court awarded a Down syndrome man nearly $13,000 for the government banning his wife from having sex with him because he, allegedly, couldn't give consent to sex. Before the ban, the man, who was not identified, had a healthy sexual relationship with his wife of five years,  The ban came after a psychologist for a local government entity – which was not identified to shield it from criticism – assessed the 38-year-old man and found him to lack the mental competence to willfully engage in conjugal relations, the court documents say. A court council warned his wife that having sex with her husband would make her guilty of a serious crime. The man was ordered to attend a sex education course before he would be allowed to have relations with his wife. But the course was delayed for more than year, earning him damages suffered for what the judge, Sir Mark Hedley, said in the court document was the “deprivation for at least 12 months of normal conjugal relations with his wife.”  The case began after the man’s sister brought her concerns about the course delays to the Court of Protection. A local government required a Down syndrome man to take two courses on sex before it would allow him to continue having conjugal relations with his wife of five years. ...

  • Controversial monument of 1840s doctor draws debate in South Carolina

    Posted 2017-08-18 17:25:30 by: Nap-Sack ....

Violence during a weekend protest in Virginia sparked major debates on race across the nation - and is now igniting conversations about a South Carolina monument memorializing a controversial doctor. - Steve Benjamin, the first black mayor in Columbia, is passionately opposed to a monument on South Carolina's State House grounds honoring Dr. J. Marion Sims, a gynecologist who carried out experiments on female slaves from 1845 to 1849. “That argument is deeply profound in the South and certainly in the wake of Charlottesville, everyone is talking about it,” Benjamin told Fox News regarding the larger issue surrounding Confederate memorials. “I had mentioned this statue of Marion Sims that I found personally offensive as a husband and father of two daughters. The experiments he had conducted in the 19th century in the name of medicine were torturous, they were despicable and its gone without a great deal of notice." Benjamin said the monument of Sims should not be displayed in a position of honor in the most traveled intersection in the state of South Carolina. Sims, famously known as the founder of modern surgical gynecology, developed an operation that helped women who were experiencing a complication during labor known as Vesicovaginal fistula. Eight decades later a statue of Sims was erected by the Women's Auxiliary of the South Carolina Medical Association in 1929. “This monument speaks to a dark time in our past,” Benjamin ...

  • Researchers inch closer to peanut allergy 'cure'

    Posted 2017-08-18 17:25:30 by: Nap-Sack ....

Could a cure for peanut allergies be close? Australia's ABC reports that in a new study, 82 percent of participants saw their peanut allergies cured within the first 18 months of treatment. Four years later, 80 percent of the participants still showed no signs of an allergy, and 70 percent passed a further test meant to confirm long-term peanut tolerance, the Guardian reports. The research out of Australia's Murdoch Childrens Research Institute involved 48 children, some of whom were given an immunotherapy treatment and some of whom got a placebo. The children who still appeared to be cured four years later "had been eating peanut freely in their diet without having to follow any particular program of peanut intake," says Mimi Tang, the lead researcher. Tang, an immunologist and allergist, combined a probiotic with a method known as peanut oral immunotherapy—a high dose of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus was combined with peanut protein in increasing amounts. The probiotic is known to calm the immune system and reduce allergic reactions; the idea is to "reprogram" the way the immune system reacts to peanut intake, Tang explains. She hopes to have a product to market within five years, the reports. ...
